Mallards Welcome Four More Signings
09/07/2009 2:01 PM
The Quad City Mallards, proud International Hockey League (IHL) affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, today announced the signings of forwards Jean Desrochers and Obi Aduba, defenseman Jacques Perreault and goaltender Kyle Jones for the 2009-10 season. Per Mallards team policy no contract terms were announced.
Desrochers, 29, comes to the Quad Cities for a second stint under the tutelage of Mallards Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Frank Anzalone, for whom he played in 2005-06 and 2006-07 as a member of the ECHL’s Johnstown Chiefs.
"Jean is a top line center man who should be an offensive leader for our team. He is a great team man who is accountable at both ends of the ice,” said Anzalone. “I coached Jean in Johnstown for two seasons and I'm excited about having him with us from the start."
After skating for Johnstown for the bulk of his first four pro seasons, Desrochers competed in Italy last year. The Dalhousie, Quebec, native scored nine times and registered 20 points in 36 games with Fassa HC in 2008-09.
The 6’ 2”, 225-pound center made three trips to the American Hockey League- two with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers and one with the Springfield Falcons- in four seasons before crossing the pond last year. In 2007-08 he enjoyed his most productive season, scoring 25 goals and notching 53 points in 62 ECHL games with the Chiefs.
Desrochers played college hockey at Clarkson, totaling 16 goals and 44 points over four seasons as a Golden Knight. He joins fellow Clarkson alumnus Chris Lipsett on the Mallard roster.
Aduba, 25, scored 28 goals and totaled 61 points in 47 games with the Danbury Mad Hatters of the Eastern Professional Hockey League last season. The Medfield, Massachusetts, product also played one game with the Elmira Jackals of the ECHL last year. The 6’ 1”, 210-pound Aduba played three seasons at Massachusetts-Amherst. He scored twice and recorded nine points in 62 games as a collegian.
"Obi is a left winger with size who started off well as a college player then found himself on the outside during the latter stages of his career at UMass. He rebounded with a very successful season in Danbury last year. Obi's references say that he may be a sleeper," said Anzalone.
The 26-year old Jones approaches his second professional campaign after going 9-16-2 with a 3.20 goals against average and a .903 save percentage in 32 games with the ECHL’s Phoenix Roadrunners last season. Jones started 2008-09 with the AHL’s Worcester Sharks, for whom he went 1-1-0 in three games while posting a 5.20 goals against average and a .756 save percentage.
"Kyle is one of the all-time leading goaltenders at St. Norbert College and won a national championship,” said Anzalone. “San Jose saw the potential in Kyle and turned him pro last season. He dramatically improved in 08-09, from his time in the AHL to the conclusion of last season when he played in Phoenix."
The North Delta, British Columbia, native spent four remarkable seasons on St. Norbert’s De Pere, Wisconsin, campus before breaking into the pro ranks. A three-time All-American, Jones won the 2007-08 Sid Watson Award as the nation’s best Division III player. The award capped off a stellar senior campaign that saw Jones backstop the Green Knights to the national title while suffering just a single loss all season. The 6’ 0”, 200-pound netminder went 21-1-3 in 25 games while turning in a microscopic 1.09 goals against average, a sterling .950 save percentage and ten shutouts.
Over the course of his college career, Jones went 87-10-8 with a 1.69 goals against average, a .926 save percentage and 25 shutouts. He set NCAA Division III career records for both wins and shutouts while helping St. Norbert to four straight Northern Collegiate Hockey Association titles.
Perreault, 24, seeks to bounce back in his first pro season after injury kept him off the ice as a senior at Northeastern University last year. The injury bug also limited the 6’ 4”, 215-pound Perreault to just 10 games as a junior in 2007-08. In two plus campaigns with the Huskies, the Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan, native collected five points in 60 games.
"Jacques is a solid defensive defenseman who earned a regular role at Northeastern. He seems to have recovered well from an injury he sustained during his senior season,” said Anzalone. “He has great reach, and there's one thing about Jacques Perreault- you can't teach size."
Desrochers, Aduba, Jones and Perreault join Lipsett, Jason Goulet, Sebastien Laplante, Michael Lombardi, Shane Lovdahl, Mike Maier and Darren McMillan- whose signings were announced last week- to bring to 11 the number of players now signed with the Mallards for the coming campaign.
