"Hilarious as it is, 'Slap Shot' the movie was actually based on a real-life incident that took place in the North American Hockey League in 1975. Three players from the Johnstown Jets- Steve Carlson, his brother Jeff and Guido Tenesi- charged up into the stands in Utica, New York to challenge a group of overly abusive fans. The players were arrested, but the fight jolted the Jets out of their season-long lethargy and ignited a long winning streak that saw them come from far back in the standings to sneak into the playoffs and eventually defeat the Syracuse Blazers for the NAHL Championship."

"THE REBEL LEAGUE the short and unruly life of the World Hockey Association" by Ed Willes 2004
"BIG BUCKS AND BLUE PUCKS from Hull to Gretzky, an anecdotal history of the late, great World Hockey Association" by Murray Greig 1997
I just recently finished reading these two books and they are both excellent reads when it comes to the WHA. I highly recommend both of these books.

Although in the playoff finals in 1974-75, the Jets defeated Binghamton--not Syracuse--for the championship.
